Jimmy Lake Schumann is known as an excellent recruiter.Īfter losing a ton of talent off the incredible 2021 Georgia team, Schumann helped the 2022 defense finish 10th in total yards and fifth in points allowed en route to another national championship. The 32-year-old Schumann is coming off his first season as co-defensive coordinator with the Bulldogs, sharing that title with Will Muschamp and taking over when Dan Lanning went to Oregon. Multiple people around the program just want him back. He could come back as defensive coordinator or position coach or analyst. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be as defensive coordinator. As it currently stands, there’s at least a good chance he could return in some capacity. If the NCAA case wasn’t hovering over him, it’s likely Pruitt would already be in Tuscaloosa working. That’s a pretty strong resume and why so many are clamoring for him to return. His defenses from 2013-17 ranked third, 17th, seventh, first and first in total yards. Pruitt has multiple years of experience running a high-level defense, including stops at Florida State, Georgia and Alabama from 2016-17. As one person told me Friday night: “If Saban wants him, then it happens.” But many influential people - inside and outside the program - are urging Saban to hire him, from what I’ve been told.

There are a lot of moving parts to bringing him back. But that doesn’t mean that he’s a shoo-in.
Any list without Pruitt’s name on it is incomplete. There’s no shortage of great candidates from whom Saban has to choose. Golding was an excellent recruiter, so whomever Saban brings in will have to fill that role as well. His defenses were better in recent years, with the best coming in 2021, and this past season’s finished just outside the top 10 nationally in total yards. How Golding will be remembered after five years in Tuscaloosa depends on one’s individual perspective, but he was always going to be judged against the great defenses of the past and the guys who led them (Kirby Smart and Jeremy Pruitt).
